The event's illustrious history includes notable figures such as the RT. Honourable Prime Minister of Uganda, Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda, and the Governor of Kisumu Kenya, his Excellence Professor Peter Nyong'o, who graced the inaugural festival. Since then, the festival has grown in stature, attracting filmmakers and cinephiles from across the globe. In 2019, the festival made history by opening with "Bed of Thorns," Uganda's first film produced entirely by an all-female crew. This milestone showcased the festival's dedication to supporting groundbreaking initiatives within the African film industry. Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the festival persevered, presenting scaled-down versions while maintaining its dedication to fostering a thriving film community. The return in December 2022 marked a triumphant milestone for the festival, with an extensive program featuring open forums, workshops on production design and sales/distribution, screenings, and a glamorous awards ceremony. Distinguished guests included representatives from the Kenyan Film Commission, Kenyan Film Classification Board, and the Kisumu Minister of Arts, Culture, and Sport.
The African Film Festival's commitment to fairness and transparency in film selection is commendable. Every submission undergoes rigorous evaluation by a panel of at least two programmers, with a third reviewer brought in if there's a difference in opinion. This meticulous process ensures that each film receives a thorough and unbiased assessment.
